Nutrition : Chia Seeds, Perfect for Runners

I love this superfood for so many reasons - these little seeds are nutrient dense, loaded with antioxidants and help keep the body hydrated.


These small but mighty seeds have become pretty popular over the past few years, but date back to the days of the Aztecs and Mayans. The word chia is the ancient Mayan word for "strength" - the Mayans used chia seeds as a sustainable energy source. 

 

 

These powerful seeds are rich in fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus.  They also help reduce blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation.

 

Chia seeds absorb thirty times (yes, 30x!) their weight in water, helping regulate body fluid levels and retain electrolytes - both key in the battle against dehydration (a constant concern for this Miami runner). 

 

My favorite way to consume chia seeds are :

  • added to my protein shake

  • sprinkled on top of a salad

  • in my oatmeal

  • my chia pudding recipe (chia seeds, unsweetened organic almond milk, stevia, cinnamon - let sit overnight in a glass container)

  • mix into baked goods

  • Health Warrior Chia Bars - I am obsessed with these! Every flavor is incredible!

Chia seeds are the perfect food for us runners!
